This is where they spend their funds? Looks like it got off the ground but fell flat after one episode was made. Good thing. I really wouldn't want people to think this is what Wormtown is all about.

Flipper Interview

Back in March of 1982 things were hopping for Punk Rock fans in Worcester. Xit 13 on Millbury St was about to open with notorious San Francisco band Flipper, who were on their first tour of the USA. WICN disc jockey Patrick Rumrill was originally from SF and knew Flipper, they even played his wedding?!? and so he set up their visit to Wormtown. The Commandos and The Freeze opened that night and it ended with most of the stage equipment destroyed. A legend was born.
But before all that, Flipper stopped by the studios of WICN on Grove St. for an interview
Then they were off for Mexican food and mayhem.

I went into the archives for Worm Bros Halloween Show from 2008. I edited it down from 5 hours to add to your listening pleasure. Jeff sure liked to do long shows. It originally contained both The Numbskulls and DMZ recorded live around that time.

Next up are Angry Johnny and the Killbillies and Sharks Come Cruisin' recorded live at The New England Bloody Roots Festival at Ralph's Diner on 10/22/11. Angry and the boys played outside so quality represents that, lot's of hootin' n hollerin' from the fine folks who attended. Sharks played later upstairs for their debut at Ralph's. Everyone sang along.
Thanks to our friend James Keyes for putting on that Fest, and hope he does it again next year.

Crazy Jack: Lost Photos

You may remember the story of Crazy Jack, Wormtowns' answer to Iggy Pop. Back in the summer of 1978, he had the idea of releasing a 45, and needed some photos for the yet to be recorded disc.
So I took my old Kodak, bought some film and we traveled around the city stopping at Bancroft Tower and The Plaza on Grafton St. to see what we could come up with. Some of the pictures still exists, but recently I came upon the negatives and scanned the full set.

Although later released on the Wormtown 78 LP, "You Ain"t My Mama No More" should have been the 45.

In Memory of Rick Blaze

In case you have not heard, Wormtown Rock N Roll legend Rick Blaze passed away Sunday, August 7th in New York City. Rick was our worldwide Ambassador of Music performing his brand of rock all over the planet. I knew Rick for years and not only did he have a prolific career in his own right, but turned me on to countless of other bands with CDs and 45s he'd given me to play on my various radio shows. He helped me out many times by playing benefits, and performing live on the air. On the WURN.net web page, I put up one such show of The Ballbusters broadcast from the studios of WICN 90.5 fm for Radio Prune with The Worm Bros on April,29th 1994. The band consisted of Rick, Jeff Crane, Dave Cuneo, and Jimmy Buscarnio. Listen and remember Rick, always ready to give it all for the music.

Took a trip Downtown to see the progress of the destruction of The Worcester Common Fashion Outlets/Galleria/Worcester Center. As you know, they are tearing down our childhood landmark and hang out spot to make way for the City Square development. It's a sad tale of a mall that was mismanaged into obscurity and lay useless for years. But in it's heyday, it was the place to go for shopping, eating, and meeting people. I personally met many girls there in my teenage years, and worked for a while at Jordan Marsh which led to my "Summer of 42" in the late 70's. I'll always have a special place in my heart for this piece of Worcester.

last weekend, and it was a blast. Cool stuff for sale, great music, burgers, Gansett, beautiful day. Eric and his band opened, and the world famous Classic Ruins drove in from Boston for more action. Missed the last band, but next year, put this on your list. Sell or buy, I picked up a cd by The Spoilers, and a 45 from The Golden Girls.

Friday at Beatniks, Guns of Navarone skank you into fall.
Saturday, Hot Rod Hell at Ralph's, with bands outside all day and inside at night.
I've even heard Sasquatch will be playing outside at 1 PM. If this is true, it will mark his first time he's been back since he was banned many years ago. Must be there. Preston Wayne Four and Angry Johnny and the Killbillys upstairs at night. Tough choice.
Over at The Hotel Vernon, The Numbskulls celebrate 10 years of punk rock with a little help from their friends.
This is one of the weekends where you can experience Wormtown in all it's glory.

Each year, Mike Malone and his wife Heidi host Malonfest where some of the Wormtown founders gather for food, fun and rock. This year was one of the best. In attendance were Preston Wayne, Chris Cah, and Cathy, and half of the Pathetics. Brian Goslow, the man who started it all, did a amazing rendition of Sonic Reducer, with Matt Griffin. And as added bonus, Cathy and Preston reunited as the fury behind what was once Crazy Jack and The Heart Attaxs, with your truly playing the part of Mike Rizzuti.
And Dave Kowalchek backed it all up as the drummer for The Depositables, this years house band.

Sheez Late and Legendary Boston Rock n Rollers Classic Ruins Friday Night at Beatnik's on Park Ave. Come see Joe Sheehan double duty drumming.
The Ruins, Frank Rowe and Carl Biancucci have been around for 30 years and have released multiple cds, lps, 45s and are one of the few true "Boston Rock" bands from The Rat heydays still performing. Now with the help of local guys Jeff Crane and Joe.
And Sheez Late, Rob Roy and Amy Mackey and Joe recently reunited and recharged to carry on where they left off and already have new material in their catalog of hits.

Friday night at Ralph's, The Fleshtones are in town. The show was set up with the help of ex wcuw DJ and former Dinny's Bartender John O'Neil, he's throwin' himself a homecoming of sorts, and what better way than putting together a night of excellent rock n roll just like the old days on Lincoln St. But wait, it gets better. JJ Rassler's new outfit, JJ and the Cuban Heels are on the bill along with The Time Beings, and The Pathetics.
The Fleshtones are in the middle of their tour and will be well rehearsed by the time they bring it to Ralph's, and it's sure to be a non-stop happening. You'll need the rest of the weekend to recuperate.

Saturday at Ralph's it's the Annual Hot Rod Show. Starts at 12 noon and runs all day and night. During the day it's FREE and you'll be able to view the rods and hear some live music outside while drinking ice cold Gansetts and eating those famous Burgers. At night the action moves upstairs with Angry Johnny and The Killbillies, Midnight Creeps, MuscleCah, Demons Alley, and Evil Streaks!!
And if that wasn't enough, The Numbskulls are across town at The Hotel Vernon with their monthly "Big F'n Show 3" series along with Something Wicked, Skull Hammer, Bottlefight and more! So, you'll have to flip the old mental rock n roll coin yourself. It's a tough call.

I've seen them a couple times, once for free at Clark University and they are always spot on with their fast sharp songs about love and life. One evening Pete Shelly spent the entire night at the studios of WICN for an interview during a solo tour years ago. I have that on tape somewhere. I always thought they were the punk equivalent of The Beatles, and paved the way for countless others who play pop/punk. If you can, GO!

One show of note this week, Moose and the Mudbugs, legendary Boston area band is back together and playing a benefit for Moose's Kitty, Psycho, at the Hotel Vernon on Friday. Although originally from Wormtown, Ed "Moose" Savage made a name for himself in Boomland during the mid 80's heyday of Boston Rock playing in all the best clubs, with all the great bands of the time. Now, he's returning to his hometown on the heels of a couple of gigs in Boston to show you what you've been missing. Also on the bill are Moose and his Litany of Complaints and The Class of '69, an all star line up of former Worcester musicians getting together for the cause. Get there early, help out the poor putty-tat.
Saturday, over at Beatniks on Park Ave, it's a "Night of Navarone", with the Guns of Navarone. Skank till you drop.

The show in Providence Friday was great. The Evil Streaks opened, followed by King Sickabilly, who were both perfect openers for this gig. Deadbolt filled the house with the sound and attitude I've become accustomed to from them, despite being down one member in RA MacLean. Got to hang out with them for a bit after the show, and I don't want to wreck their image, but they are great guys and not really that scary at all. I recorded the show for a future net-cast, with their permission. I also got the chance to pick up a copy of their latest CD, "Voodoo Moonshine", that is only available at the shows for now. In the meantime here's a video.

The flipcam had a slightly rough time with their bass heavy sound, but there are a bunch more to watch on Youtube.

Friday, an Out Of Wormtown Experience at Club Hell in Protown with Deadbolt!
Big show this week at Ralph's on Saturday Night. GroupAction is having their long awaited reunion. Featuring Wormtown's own Action Woman, Deb Auchery, Heinrich von Schtupp, and Rev. Sean Revoltah. They have been off the scene for 4 or 5 years and have been rehearsing tirelessly to please the fans.
Also on the bill are Huck, Mystery Wounds, and Shawn Revoltah. So that's where it's at, on that end. Too.

Deadbolt, May 7

This Friday, Club Hell in Providence host "The Scariest Band in the World". From San Diego, California, it's Deadbolt. I first discovered this band by accident. I was Christmas shopping at Media Play at The Worcester Common Fashion outlets, (shows you how long ago it was!), waiting in line to check out, and on a rack of close out discs was their debut CD "Shrunken Head". By the look of it, I could tell they were different. Their music is like the soundtrack to every 60's Horror B Movie, with lyrics to match. As the years went by, I searched out more recordings and eventually got a chance to see them in NYC, when Mike Malone picked that city as a destination for his bachelor party. We had a choice between them or the Fleshtone's. We made the right choice. That was the last time Deadbolt played in the area and I swore I'd see them the next time they visited. They usually play around the west coast and travel to Europe, and are currently on a US tour which has caused some controversy within the Deadbolt community. Just last week, founding member, Bass player RA MacLean quit the band after a "disagreement" with drummer Bad Time Charlie. What this means for the future of the band, I don't know. But I plan to see them now while I can, you should too.
Also on the bill are Evil Streaks and King Sickabilly. Show of the year, so far.

It was 32 years ago today The Wormtown Punk Punk Press issue #1 hit the streets of Worcester. I can't believe it's lasted so long. You can celebrate by listening to The Wormtown Birthday Show on wurn.org. It features The Performers, The Numbskulls and Musclecah recorded live at Beatnik's at the After Party for Wormtown Rocks! exhibition at the Worcester Art Museum, which runs through May 14th, and Mack the Knife, recorded at Ralph's on April 23rd. Narragansett Beer was in town last night at The Boynton on Highland St. to celebrate the 120th year of brewing our favorite beer. Much fun was had, many Gansetts were consumed. What a great bunch of guys and gals these people are. They really care about their customers, and go out of their way to make you happy. Can you say that about your beer? Slow this week, but that's OK. It's going to be wicked nice out, with summer like weather.
Start tonight with a non rock n roll event at The Boynton on Highland St where our favorite beer, Narragansett will be on hand to celebrate their 120th anniversary with specials and prizes! Yes, Clammie and Tall Boy will be there. Starts at 8pm.
Friday Sasquatch invades Green St. with a gig at The Lucky Dog. It's his "King Sickabilly One Man Band" performance, which I have never seen, but imagine it's as good as it gets with this wild man. He's getting ready for the gig next week at Club Hell in Providence opening for DEADBOLT! More on that next week.

Twisted Tuesday

Here is one of the reasons I grew up so twisted.
Mad Magazine was a must read for my adolescent brain. Their "usual gang of idiots" helped me to see what the real world was all about. One of my favorite features was "The Lighter Side of.." by Dave Berg. He would draw and write about everyday life in the USA. You can still pick up a copy at your favorite comic book store, this one comes from the mid 60's.

I've been slow with posts lately here, busy with other stuff. Losing interest? The weather has been so nice, who wants to sit in front of a computer?
All of the action this week is at Ralph's, and it's all punk rock action, with a touch of Ska.
Friday, it's Slitstich, The Numbskulls, Mack the Knife, Black Noise Scam,from New Haven CT, and The Tenafly Vipers from the Boston area. An evening chock full of rock.
Saturday, still at the Diner, Murphy's Law bring their punk rock from NYC to Wormtown with Bovachevo, Antietam, a band that features my cousin Jeff, and The Commandos! It's time to jump in the pit and go mental. Now I'm going back outside.

Friday, head over to Vincents for the roots rock sounds of Jason James and the Baystate Houserockers. They will tear up the mailbox and rip out the floors.
Over at the Hotel Vernon, there is a punk show with bands I'm not familiar with. It's cheap though, so you should go. Check the poster.
Saturday, there's more fun than you can shake your stick at starting over on Highland Street at The Sahara where The Amoebas, Artie Sneiderman and friends, opening up for The Red Riders. If you missed them last time they played, now's your chance.
Beatniks, the site of last weeks shindig for Wormtown, hosts Guns of Navarone and The Stress from RI. This will be the "Ska's not Dead" party, go see why.
And back over to the Ship Room at The Hotel Vernon, The Numbskulls host "Big F'in 7" part two with a bunch of bands I have heard of, but am to lazy to type now. Look at the flyer. You'll see them.
The weather is going to be lousy this weekend, so stay inside the clubs of Wormtown, keep warm and have fun!

Summer's over, back to Spring.
I don't need to tell you what's going on tonight, do I??
Worcester Art Museum at 6pm, Beatniks at 9pm. Be there.
Friday, at The Hotel Vernon, another FREE show featuring Mack the Knife, quickly becoming the hardest working band in Wormtown, along with Leech Eater, and The Terribles. I really dig Mack the Knife and hope they release a full length disc soon.
Over at Ralph's, a competing Ska/Reggae/Punk show Wrighteous L, Satellite Rockers, The Wendels, Flatout Jones, Dub Sack Dynasty. I know nothing about those bands, so can't report anything. But it sounds like fun.
Saturday, there is a special benefit show at Ralph's for Team Siart, featuring Huck, Angry Johnny and the Killbillies, Black Helicopter and more! It starts early so plan accordingly. Angry says he's going on at 5:30 pm. You can read all about the cause in Worcester Mag. Do something nice for someone this weekend.

Wormtown Rocks Opens Thursday

The wait will soon be over. The Worcester Art Museum's Who Shot Rock and Roll exhibit presents Wormtown Rocks!! A showing of photographs by local artists shooting bands in the clubs of Worcester. I stopped by yesterday and got a sneak peak of the exhibit and all my favorites are in it. The Odds, The Commandos, The Pathetics to name just a few. It starts at 6pm in the Higgins Education Wing and is free to enter.
After that, the party moves to Beatniks on Park Ave. for Real Wormtown Rock n Roll with The Numbskulls, Worcester's #1 Punk Band for years running, Musclecah, featuring one of the founders of the scene, Cathy Cah, and The Performers, who played tirelessly throughout the late 70's and 80's and are reuniting for this event. Not to be missed. Beatniks is a great new bar that opened last June and also serves food if you're hungry after all this excitement. Parking available on the street and in their lot behind the bar. Admission is $7, with $1 going back to the museum for the Art School.
This is the first time any major organization in the city has embraced the scene we started 32 years ago, and you need to be part of it. So, please do stop by and become part of history.

It stood for years on Main Street in Worcester on the face of a defunct high end furniture store as you entered downtown from the north side. A four story proclamation that you were in a city that rocked. For years, I was accused of creating this monument to local music, only to answer, "yeah, I wish."
In actuality, It was created by Spider Hanson, former sound man and part time percussionist for legendary local outfit known as Zonkeraz, along with Keri Casso, who was the booking agent for Rick's Cafe American, the bar the sign pointed to at 286 Main St. One night they borrowed a ladder from another local musician named Nick Martinelli, who played in a cover band called Killer Queen, climbed upon a ledge overhanging Main Street and etched the facade with the words "Wormtown Rocks!!!" Everyone saw it, Everyone knew about it. It lasted a long time until eventually falling to the wrecking ball in the name of progress. They should have just left it there, because for years no progress was made and the spot was no more than a vacant parking lot until recently becoming home to the new Courthouse. Local politicians hated it, local music fans reveled in it. The photo you see here was commissioned by Carol Moberley to hang at Ralph's Diner. That, too, hung in the upstairs bar for years and is now unaccounted for. The legend lives on.
