Wormtown Weekend

The weekend is here, and it's time to play.
Friday, The Fighting Cocks, featuring Jamie Severance of Wormtown faves Unattached are at JJ Sports bar in Northboro. I know, why not in the city? I asked Jamie that same question last time I saw him and he said his band can't get a gig at Ralph's. Boy, how times have changed. So do them and yourself a favor and head down Route 9 for an evening of great music.
Saturday, Sasquatch and the Sick A Billys return to the Lucky Dog for The Holy Hell Hoedown IV. Sasquatch has recently been touring with his Psycho Metal band and putting the Sick A Billys on hold, so here's you chance to see them in town again.
Over at The Ship Room at The Hotel Vernon, it's another FREE punk show with Gas Attack, Slitstich, The Allston Pants , and those TV Stars, The Pity Whores. In these tough economic times, there is no better way to fight those cover charges and drink 1 dollar Narragansetts. The folks at Narragansett have launched a new website that you should check out. Especially the Gansett Girls. Another reason to love that beer.
And finally, if you are in Madrid, Spain, Lyres are playing on Saturday at Caracol for Go, Sinner Go! vol 4. I'll be there!!!

WICN Playlist 1982

There was war in The Falklands, the Commodore 64 was shaping the future, the first CD's were released. This is what topped the charts on Worcester's public radio station, back when they had a Rock Music Dept.

Wormtown Weekend

Here we are, Memorial Day Weekend, the kick off of Summah 2009, and it's chock full of rock.
Tonight over at Ralph's it's more Punk than you can handle as Trickstah presents The Pathetics, Bottlefight, The McGunks, Switchblade Suicide, and Sins of America. You better call in sick on Friday, you'll need to rest.
Saturday, Milltown Rods presents The 100 Percent Kulture Hot Rod & Kustom Show at Ralph's Diner starting at Noon. This is a FREE show, and features not only cool cars but cool music with Pulp 45, Soul Reapin 3, Preston Wayne 4, and The Long Goodbyes. Last year this was a great time, and this year should be just as good. Hot fun under the sun.
Then at night the show continues upstairs with 7 bands (see flyer) including the return of Angry Johnny and the Killbillies. It's been quite a while since Angry and the boys played Wormtown, what with Angry losing his mind last year, but now they are back and not to be missed.
Over at The Raven on Pleasant St, there is a Punk Rock Spectacular with The Numbskulls, The Sentence, The Murder, Nix Bitches, and fresh from their appearance on The Jerry Springer Show, The Pity Whores. Even though they lost the competition, seeing them on national TV was great. Ask them for all the backstage dirt.
Then spend the rest of the weekend honoring the fallen soldiers who made this the land of the free.

WTF? (political rant)

Our great state leaders are now meeting to raise the sales tax. How much more of this bullshit are we going to have to take? Talk about kickin' the masses while they're down. How about cutting out some waste at the top. And where's Screwball Patrick? Hangin' with the Big O down in DC. I didn't vote for this. He's just like every other politician, lyin' bastards!

Wormtown Weekend

All the action is on Saturday Night this week, the 51st anniversary of LB Worm.
We'll start at Ralph's with a fun filled Punky Reggae Party featuring The Cool and the Deadly, Destroy Babylon, and Wormtown's own Guns Of Navarone. The place will be groovin all night.
Next, over at The Lucky Dog, the hugely popular Green Street Music Series is back with the songs of REM and U2 performed by a group of some of the best players in town calling themselves Rattle and Hum. If this is your scene, best to arrive early as this is always a sellout.
Then over at The Greyhound Pub, just down Green St, are The Pathetics, performing their punk rock classics acoustically, which believe or not, is quite entertaining, along with Frank Hinckley, from The Raw and The Allens.
And finally, over at Vincents, it's the return of Psychobilly Cadillac. They will be ripping it up and shakin' Suffolk St. until the wee hours of the night. Just don't ask Frank to get you a beer.
So much action in one night. Flip your own mental coin.

That Was Easy!

The Pity Whores on Springer!

That's right. Wormtown's favorite out of town band made it in to the top three "performers" competing on The Jerry Springer Show for the honor of being the official Springer Singer band. They taped the show earlier this week and it will air on May 20th on channel 56 at 11 am. Be sure to tune in and and vote so these boys can go all the way to the top. Then next time you see them you can say you met real TV stars!

The Odds Part 4: Epilogue

Yes, It was a terrific night. The Odds were in top form, well surpassing their performance of last year. They showed why they were one of the most popular bands to ever grace the stages of Wormtown. They band was tight and structured paying close attention to detail as they ran through their set of old favorites and even reworked some classics into entirely different renditions. Here are a few shots from the show, and a couple more old articles I didn't get the chance to post before the gig.
Watch wurn.org for the audio of the show in the future.

The Odds Live

What a night.

UPDATE: Here's another one.

Salute to Ralph's

For 30 years, undoubtedly the coolest club in Worcester. I've been hanging around there for 29 of the 30 years. Sometimes, I'll sit there and remember everything that has transpired over the years. The days when they'd have a band playing upstairs and downstairs. Butch and Crazy Dave working the Blue Moon Saloon. Ralph and Foghorn working the Diner. The line waiting to get in with police overseeing it all. Big Frank's cries of "Drink' em up! Let's go!" at closing time. The list goes on. Go to the party tonight and see why there is no other place like it.

Wormtown Weekend

Let's see... what is going on this weekend in Wormtown...I know there's something, now what was it?

Friday, head over to Vincent's for some good old timey music from Allan Sheinfeld & Stan Kozlowski from The Spurs with Jack Hanlon from The Stumbleweeds!!! That will be a show to see.
Also on Friday, Bottlefight is back at The Red Onion 29 Main St., Otter River. I heard this place has to be seen to be believed. Just head up rte 68, watch out for Johnny Law.
Then, on Saturday IT'S RALPH'S 30th ANNIVERSARY!!! That's right, the wait is over. Jason James and the Bay State Houserockers, The Odds , Hot Rod Fury, and Slik Family Orkestra. Celebrate 30 years of the coolest club on earth. Go for the music, dig the vibe. Have a burger and Narragansett Beer will be on hand to make the party even better with the Gansett Swag. By the way, got a note this week that Narragansett Beer is now available at Fenway Park for the first time in over 30 years. So next time you go see the Sox, have a Gansett, or two.
Hope to see you all there at The Diner on Grove Street.

The Odds Part 3

This one comes from "The Worcester Beat" a short lived publication from 1985 that covered the music scene in Wormtown.

Don't forget, they are playing Ralph's 30th this Saturday, May 9th.

For some rare Odds demos go to The Worm Bros Myspace page and hear the songs they recorded at MCM Studios in 1982.
